35 still missing First Posted 14:02:00 09/28/2009

MANILA, Philippines ? Around 80 residents in Quezon City were swept away by flash floods during the onslaught of typhoon ?Ondoy? when they tried to escape by rushing towards a house eventually dragged by the current.

Police are still looking for 35 victims after recovering most of the bodies in retrieval operations over the weekend, according to the Batasan police station commander, Superintendent Constante Agpaoa.

?We are still digging up the muck and mud in the east portion of Barangay [Village] Bagong Silangan to look for more bodies,? Agpaoa said in a phone interview on Monday.

The police official said they have already identified 28 bodies as those of residents in his area of responsibility, with 25 coming from Bagong Silangan and two from the nearby Villa Real Subdivision.

Meanwhile, police are still trying to identify 17 other bodies, which were also recovered near the riverbanks of the Marikina River, to see if the victims were also Quezon City residents.

Agpaoa said the victims were swept away by the sudden flashfloods after water swelled from nearby creeks and the Marikina River on Saturday afternoon.
