Obama hails Cory Aquino’s ‘moral leadership’

MANILA, Philippines -- President Barack Obama was ?deeply saddened? by the death of Corazon C. Aquino, saying the former Philippine president exemplified the best in the Filipino nation.

A statement read by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs in Washington D.C. and issued by the US embassy in Manila said Aquino played a crucial role in Philippine history, moving the country to democratic rule through her non-violent ?People Power? movement over 20 years ago.

?Her courage, determination, and moral leadership are an inspiration to us all and exemplify the best in the Filipino nation,? the statement said.

The US president also extended his condolences to the Aquino family and the Filipino people.

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, in a statement released by the US Department of State, said Aquino was beloved by her nation and admired by the world for her extraordinary courage after the assassination of her husband, former senator Benigno Aquino Jr., and later, during her service as Philippine president.

?She helped bring democracy back to the Philippines after many years of authoritarian rule with a faith in her country and its people that never wavered,? Clinton said.

?Like millions of people worldwide, Bill and I were inspired by her quiet strength and her unshakable commitment to justice and freedom. We join the American and Filipino people in honoring her life and memory,? she added.
