MANILA, Philippines?A suspected illegal recruiter who claimed to be a consul in Japan was accused before the Manila Regional Trial court on Tuesday of duping several jobseekers abroad.

Charged with violation of Republic Act 8042 (Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995) was Remigio Jacobe, alias Rolando Jacobe, of Veraville Royal, BF Resort Village, Las Pinas City.

Assistant City Prosecutor Francisco Salomon, who filed the information in court, recommended no bail.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by several jobseekers who claimed they were lured by the accused to work in the Palau Islands, Japan and United States.

They added that the suspect demanded and received from them amounts ranging from P30,000 to P130,000 as processing and placement fees.

One of the complainants, Mabel Ortega, 24, a native of Leyte, claimed that the accused introduced himself as a consul in Japan who had been helping Filipinos seeking work abroad.

Ortega said Jacobe sweet-talked her into giving money supposedly for the processing of her travel documents. She added that she was also promised a lucrative salary and that she could be deployed in a few weeks.

However, the promised overseas employment did not materialize.

Ortega said the accused suddenly disappeared. She added she was surprised to receive a call informing her that Jacobe had been arrested for duping several other job applicants.

A verification made with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration showed that Jacobe was not licensed to recruit workers for overseas employment, court records showed.
