MANILA, Philippines—Senator Maria Ana Consuelo Madrigal is in politically turbulent Thailand but aides were not sure whether she was stranded there like thousands of foreigners following the shutdown of two major airports in Bangkok, which have been seized by anti-government protesters.
Aides said on Monday that Madrigal went to Pattaya last November 26 upon the invitation of the Crown Prince of Denmark for an environment project.
They said the senator was due to return home Sunday and that they had difficulty communicating with her.
As of this posting, the aides said they got word from Madrigal's executive assistant that the senator would return to the country on Wednesday. There were no other details given on how she would return home.
But Senator Panfilo Lacson said that Madrigal told him before she left last week that she was due back to the country on Tuesday.
Lacson said Madrigal would be back in time for the session Wednesday.
He also said he also could not get through the two phones of Madrigal.
The Senate will resume its session on Wednesday after Monday's observation of Bonifacio Day and Tuesday's celebration of Pasay Day.
Thai Premier Somchai Wongsawat declared a state of emergency at the two airports in Bangkok, which continue to be occupied by anti-government protesters.
More than 400 Filipinos stranded in Bangkok since the siege of the airports were expected to arrive Monday night. More are coming home Tuesday, this time in a mercy flight arranged by the government.
