Sabah NGO seeks postponement of crackdown

KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia? With just days to go before a massive crackdown on illegal immigrants gets underway in Sabah, a non-governmental organization is seeking a three-month suspension of ejection.

Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) chairman Sari Nuar said the postponement was needed to allow employers to register their illegal foreign workers with the Immigration Department.

?After the grace period, we will support whatever the government decides to do with foreigners who are still in the state,? he said after chairing a FCAS meeting here over the weekend.

On Saturday, Sabah Immigration Department officer-in-charge of labor affairs Supiani Sipin said a three-month registration period for illegal foreign workers had begun on August 1 in conjunction with the crackdown operations.

She said the department had set up 20 teams to conduct the registration of Filipino and Indonesian workers.

Sari said employers hoped that procedures for the application and work passes would be simplified apart from seeking a 50 percent reduction in foreign workers? levy.

He said that if a levy reduction was not possible, the government should consider allowing employers to pay the dues in installment.

?Since the various departments are computerized, I?m sure this can be done,? Sari added. The Star-ANN
