Migrante slams Palace ‘cover-up’ of Sabah abuses

MANILA, Philippines—An overseas Filipino workers group on Friday scored Malacańang for allegedly covering up the real situation of Filipinos being deported by the thousands from Sabah, Malaysia.

Migrante-International criticized the statement of Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita that Philippine and Malaysian governments had laid down ground rules for the “orderly” repatriation of Filipinos living or working in Malaysia.

“News stories have been rife with numerous accounts of human rights violations. And all government can say is that they have laid down the groundwork? What hogwash! How typical of this inutile and dense government to announce that they have ‘laid down the groundwork’ even as the rights of our compatriots have already been violated?” said Migrante chair Connie Bragas-Regalado.

To make matters worse, according to Regalado, Ermita went on record to say that the government must be careful in dealing with the repatriation issue as it needs to consider its relations with Malaysia.
