WASHINGTON D.C. -- (UPDATE) US President George W. Bush expressed “deep condolences” to the families of those who perished in Typhoon Frank (international codename: Fenshen) and said the US was ready to help the Philippines deal with the aftermath of the disaster.

“I express our deep condolences to those who suffered as a result of the typhoon," Bush said shortly after he met with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in his Oval Office Tuesday morning (evening in Manila).

"I know there are some families that are hurting. Some are wondering whether or not their loved ones will reappear," said Bush, who promised US food aid. "This is a time where America needs to step up, and we will, Madame President."

“The American people care about the human suffering that is taking place. We send our prayers,” he said.

Bush announced that his government is sending another vessel, USS Ronald Reagan, to help in the search for survivors.

“We want to help our friends in time of need,” said Bush. “And we are happy to do it.”

The United States Pacific Command on Monday ordered US Navy Ship Stockham, with search and rescue helicopters aboard, to proceed to Sibuyan Island in Romblon province to help in the rescue and recovery for hundreds of people missing in a weekend ferry disaster.

At the same time, a US Navy P-3 maritime surveillance aircraft was ordered to help in the search for survivors.

The US also pledged to send P4 million (about $100,000) worth of emergency relief supplies to the Philippine National Red Cross. The donation is the maximum amount that can be sent to the US Embassy in Manila without prior authorization from Congress.

Typhoon Frank has left hundreds of people dead or missing across the Philippines and wrought an estimated P4.27 billion in damage to property, officials in Manila said.

A ferry carrying 849 passengers and crew went down after sailing into the eye of the typhoon Saturday and only 48 have been found alive so far.

President Arroyo, who is currently on a 10-day trip to the United States, spoke in Filipino, which was not translated. When she finished, Bush drew laughter by joking: "I couldn't have said it better myself." With Agence France-Presse
