MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) European Union President Jose Manuel Barroso and Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands have sent their sympathies and condolences to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and families of the victims of typhoon Frank (international code name: Fengshen).
"It is with great sadness that I learned about the tragic consequences of the typhoon Fengshen, and in particular of the sinking of a ferry-boat off the province of Romblon, where so many people lost their lives and many others were injured. On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, allow me to offer you and the people of the Republic of the Philippines our sincere condolences and the expression of our deepest sympathy and solidarity with the families of the victims," Barroso said in a letter addressed to the President and sent through the Department of Foreign Affairs Tuesday.
Similarly, the Queen Beatrix said: "I share your anguish at the news of the devastating typhoon that hit your country and wish to convey to you and all those who have suffered in this catastrophe my sincere sympathy and condolence. I grieve with the families of the victims."
Scores of people were killed, thousands were displaced, and many are still missing in the wake of the typhoon.
