BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental ? The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) arrested an alleged drug courier after they confiscated suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) concealed in packs of snack food in Silay City about 7:45 p.m. Monday, PDEA Western Visayas chief Paul Ledesma said Tuesday.

Ledesma said a PDEA team from Negros Occidental, the Police Center for Aviation Security and the Silay City police arrested Xavier Louis Rosales outside the Bacolod-Silay Airport.

He said the PDEA team recovered about 40 grams of suspected shabu estimated to be worth P400,000 from Rosales, a resident of barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City. Wrapped in aluminum foil, the packets of shabu were hidden in a package of sealed boxes of snack food packs, Ledesma added.

Shabu concealed in aluminum foil wrappers would be difficult to detect through X-ray machines, he explained.

The team waited for Rosales to pick up a package from Manila at the Cebu Pacific cargo office at the Bacolod Silay Airport before arresting him, Ledesma told the Philippine Daily Inquirer

Now detained at the Silay City jail, Rosales has been under surveillance by the PDEA for sometime after they received information that the suspect was a courier working for a big drug group operating in Negros Occidental, Ledesma said.

He said the shabu could have been intended for sale in Bacolod City and northern Negros Occidental.
