Sonsona vs Vazquez in jeopardy

First Posted 08:53:00 11/25/2009

According to reports, a planned showdown between super bantamweights Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. (17-0-1, 14KOs) and Marvin Sonsona (14-0-1, 12KOs) is in jeopardy. This after Sonsona was held to a draw in his last fight against Alejandro Hernandez last Sunday.

Before the fight this weekend, a contract was presented on the table for Vazquez to face Sonsona on February 20 in Manila.

The WBO super bantamweight title has been recently vacated by unbeaten Juan Manuel Lopez who is moving up to featherweight to challenge WBO champion Steven Luevano.

It was believed that the WBO would approve a Sonsona vs. Vazquez bout for the vacant title but after the outcome of last Sunday's fight, the WBO may refuse to sanction the fight for the vacant throne.

According to Primera Hora, Vazquez's promoter Félix ?Tutico? Zabala will only accept the Sonsona bout if the WBO title is at stake - or else they will sit on their ranking and await a decision from the WBO as to who their opponent will be for the vacant title.

?We have a contract to fight Sosona on February 20 for the title at 122 pounds. As Sosona went to a draw in his last fight, we do not know what will happen. If it won't be for the title, the fight does not interest us,? Zabala told Primera Hora. ?What we want is for Wilfredo to fight for a championship.?

It can be recalled that Sonsona lost his WBO bantamweight title last Sunday when he failed to make the 115 lb limit in the fight?s official weigh-in.

The unbeaten fighter tipped the scales at 117 lbs which was 2 lbs above the bantamweight limit and was subsequently stripped of his title. His handlers decided not to let Sonsona try to shed the excess poundage for fear of risking the boxer?s health.
