BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines - Two sisters, both confessed leaders of the New People's Army in central Negros, with a total bounty of P1.1 million for their arrest, surrendered to the military, on Wednesday.

Col. Maximo Caro, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander of the Philippine Army, identified the two as Emma and Joan Calderon, both of whom were involved with the rebel movement for 11 years.

Caro said the sisters surrendered to the 303rd Infantry Brigade in Murcia, Negros Occidental.

According to Caro, Emma admitted that she was a member of the executive committee of the NPA Central Negros Front Committee Komiteng Tagapatuman (Implementation Committee) while her sister Joan was the assistant squad leader of platoon 2.

He said the surrender of the Calderon sisters was facilitated by their father Noe, a former militiaman who convinced them to quit the rebel movement.

Caro said the Calderon sisters were facing rebellion and murder charges in connection with the ambush-slaying of former Canlaon City Mayor Jose ?Ondo? Cardenas and several others in 2001.

Guihulngan Regional Trial Court Judge Rosendo Bandal, who issued the arrest warrants for the Calderon sisters, denied them bail.

Caro said the government offered a reward of P550,000 each, for the arrest of Calderon sisters. inquirer
