Bacolod City, Philippines - The Visayas power grid will get an additional 294-megawatt (MW) boost in 2010 when coal power plants in Iloilo and Cebu worth P40 billion begin operations, the Global Business Power Corp. has announced.

The Cebu Energy Development Corp. (CEDC), a consortium composed of Global Formosa Power Holdings and Abovant Holding Inc., has been planning to build a 246-megawatt circulating fluidized bed coal-fired power plant, in Barangay (village) Sangi, Toledo City in Cebu, Ed Satina, the assistant vice president for commercial operations of the Global Power Corp., said on Saturday.

Satina, the concurrent CEDC commercial manager, said the plant would have three 82-megawatt units worth P22 billion and would start operations in 2010.

Of the 246 MW, Santina said 220.5 MW would be for sale to the Visayas grid in 2010 with 73.5 MW available by March.

Satina said the plant's generated capacity would increase to 147 MW by June and to 246 MW by September, which would be made available to Cebu and neighboring provinces.

The power from the Cebu plant has been offered for sale to Negros Island, Satina said. Two power cooperatives in Negros Oriental expressed interests, he added.

The CEDC is a different company from the Cebu-based Kepco-Salcon Power Corp. with which the Central Negros Electric Cooperative in Bacolod City has signed a contract for the purchase of power. /Inquirer
