ILOILO CITY — Two motorcycle-riding armed men gunned down the provincial fire marshal of Iloilo late yesterday afternoon.

Supt. Casiano del Castillo, chief of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Iloilo, died from multiple gunshot wounds, mostly in the head, Senior Supt. Bartolome Tobias, acting Iloilo City police director, said in a telephone interview.

Tobias said initial investigation showed that Del Castillo was walking toward his home at Land Heights Subdivision on Quezon Street, Arevalo District, around 5:50 p.m. when the gunmen drove past him and repeatedly fired their weapons.

Del Castillo took a jeepney home after work and was just a block away from where he disembarked when he was gunned down, Tobias said.

Police found five .45-caliber shells at the crime scene.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Savior International Hospital.

Police have not determined the motive for Del Castillo's killing.

Checkpoints have been set up in the city and neighboring towns to apprehend the killers. INQUIRER
