ROXAS CITY—Thirty houses, including those belonging to a fireman, a village chief and two barangay councilors, in barangay 6 this city were gutted by fire shortly before noon yesterday.

Fire Inspector Pacho de la Cruz, chief of the Roxas City Fire Protection (RCFP), said the fire might be the biggest to hit the city in the past five years.

The fire razed the houses at the corner of Aglipay and Zamora streets, including those of fireman Magno Arroyo of the RCFP, barangay 6 village chief Noel Agapito and barangay councilors Liberato Villanueva and Reynaldo Lopez.

The fire started at about 11:10 a.m. and was placed under control by firemen 40 minutes later.

Firetrucks from Roxas City, Capiz Citizen Action Group (CACAG) and nearby towns also responded to the fire alarm.

De la Cruz has yet to disclose the origin of the fire and damage costs.

Aside from unconfirmed reports that an eight-month-old boy was allegedly trapped inside one of the homes, no one was reportedly hurt.

Roxas City Mayor Vicente Bermejo, who went to the fire scene immediately, ordered the City Social Welfare Office to respond the needs of the victims by providing food and clothing. The affected families were evacuated to the village's day center. Inquirer
