Icons Bata, Parica rebound in US tilt

First Posted 09:06:00 05/21/2010

FILIPINO billiards icons Efren ?Bata? Reyes and Jose ?Amang? Parica toppled their respective rivals in the losers? brackets yesterday to remain in the title hunt of the 2010 US Open 10-ball Championship at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada, USA.

The Hall of Famer Reyes beat James Baraks, 9-5 while Parica edged Beau Runningen, 9-7, both from the host country.

The other day, Reyes, who won the World 9-Ball crown in 1999, lost to compatriot Roberto ?Pinoy Superman? Gomez, 6-9 in the second round of the winners? bracket while Parica, who led the Filipinos? invasion of the rich US billiards circuit in the early 80?s, lost via default against Sarah Rousey of the USA in the opening round.

The double elimination, winner?s break format offers a total pot prize of $89,000 with the champion getting the lion?s share worth $20,000. The runner-up up to the fourth placer gets $12,500, $8,500 and $5,700, respectively.

After yesterday?s losers brackets action, games in the winner?s side will resume today.

The third round of the winners? bracket pit Al Lapena vs Mike Dechaine, Lee Vann Corteza vs Francis Crevier, Edwin Montal vs Francisco Bustamante, Stan Tourangeau vs Dennis Orcullo, Jason Klatt vs Roberto Gomez, Ronnie Alcano vs Thomas Engert and Warren Kiamco vs Ralf Souquet.

?I think there?s a better than good chance that a Filipino will win the tournament considering the dominating form showed by our players in recent, big international events,? said sportsman/ businessman Aristeo "Putch" Puyat, the acknowledged God Father of Philippine Billiards.

It can be recalled that Filipinos Lee Vann Corteza and Dennis Orcullo ruled the two events which preceded the inaugural US Open 10-Ball Championship last week while Francisco Bustamante topped a big tournament in Canada two weeks ago.
