The reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) juniors division champions Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens took two hits with one stone as they fell prey to the PTT Fuels-University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 71-86, and lost their star player in Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinals in the Cesafi Partner's Cup, yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
CIT, backed by Bibbo Hotdog, saw their walls crumble as Cesafi and JR. NBA MVP Mark Jayven Tallo, suddenly collapsed and suffered convulsions with 8:39 remaining in the fourth period. According to team officials and the attending medical personnel, Tallo was initially suffering from fever but persevered to play.
As a result, he was severely dehydrated, resulting in his fainting. As he collapsed, he hit the back of his head on the floor which may have caused his convulsions. He was brought immediately to Chong Hua Hospital where he remains under observation.
The Wildkittens led by 11, 40-29, at the turn, thanks to the eight-point performance of Tallo in the second period. However, they allowed the Baby Lancers to score 33 points in the third stanza. Gerald Legarde, Edcor Marata and Eugene Nunez ran amok in that stretch as they combined for 29 points to help UV take a 62-61 lead into the final period.
With Tallo gone, the baby Lancers ran away with the victory and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Vincent Mendoza paced PTT Fuels with 20 points while Legarde and Marata added 12 markers each. The victory allowed UV to take one step closer towards gaining revenge against CIT, which ousted them in the semifinals of the Cesafi wars last season.
Meanwhile, the Enervon C-University of Cebu Baby Webmasters also took their own road to redemption as they outlasted the Ave Maria Sanctuary and Park-University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, 94-84, in yet another rematch of last year's semifinals.
UC utilized a sizzling third period performance by John Aranas to overhaul a six-point halftime lead. They were down, 35-41, when Aranas scored 15 in that stretch and joined forces with Alvin Labo-Labo, who also added nine to help them take 65-59 lead into the homestretch.
Game 2 of the semis in the juniors division commences today while the seniors' ?Final Four? kicks off as well.
Meanwhile, Lion Tiger-USPF completed its dominance over UC, ousting the latter following yesterday?s, 71-56 win in their seniors division quarterfinals.
Jam Ferraren and Ellison Rivera both scored 12 points for USPF which completed the daunting twice-to-win task vs the Webmasters.
