Cebu Sports Hall of Famer for weightlifting Aliño, 87

CEBU SPORTS Hall of Famer for weightlifting Col. Narciso ?Tingting? Alino has passed away Tuesday night after succumbing to cardiac arrest.

The former chairman of the Philippine Weightlifting Association was 87 years old.

His granddaughter Esperanza Alino Estomata said that Alino had suffered from diabetes for several years and has been rendered totally blind by the illness.

He was married to Purification Orita Kintanar and had six children.

Alino was enshrined to the Cebu Sports Hall of Fame back in 1999 for his world-class achievement and contribution to Philippine weightlifting.

He was also named the 1996 Sportsman of the Year by the Sportswriters Association of Cebu.

Ramon Solis, RP team coach and former Olympian, said that Alino was considered a ?father? by everyone in the sport.

?I considered him as my second father. He was the one who guided me and I credit him for my success in weightlifting,? Solis said.

Alino was accorded the status of International Referee Category 1 by the International Weightlifting Federation having refereed in the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, Asian Weightlifting Championships and the World Weightlifting Championships.

In the course of his weightlifting career, Alino held several posts in both the Asian Weightlifting Federation and the ASEAN Weightlifting Federation.

Alino has also headed several delegations in international competitions such as in the Asian Games, Sea Games and the Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships.

His body lies in state at the Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapel in Nivel Hills, Lahug, Cebu City. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
