THE protest filed by Mexican challenger Omar Niño Romero regarding the result of the Feb. 27 bout against WBC lt.flyweight champion Rodel Mayol of the Philippines has been voted upon by the Board of Governors of the World Boxing Council (WBC).

In an official statement posted on various internet websites, the WBC has unanimously voted to ratify the decision announced last Feb. 27 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. This means that the technical draw result still stands. But the WBC also ordered an immediate rematch.

The WBC cited rule WC 3 #16 for unexpected events: In the event that, at the discretion of the referee, it becomes impossible to continue the bout, the result of the bout will be a Technical Draw or Decision depending on the round in which the fight was stopped.

In that controversial contest, Romero delivered a low blow in the third round that caused Mayol to drop his guard. Then the Mexican floored him with a left hook. Mayol was taken out of the ring on a stretcher while the Mexican corner celebrated thinking they had won. However, WBC vice-president Mauricio Sulaiman announced that the bout had been declared a draw.

The boxers have been given five days to submit a written confirmation of their participation in the rematch. If Mayol declines to fight Romero, the title will be declared vacant. If Romero declines to fight, the WBC will name a substitute fighter in accordance with the organization's Rules and Regulations.
