Separating Jr. NBA from other hoop camps

BASKETBALL clinics continue to sprout like mushrooms. But helping basketball aspirants learn not only the basic basketball skills but also develop right attitude is what separates the Jr. NBA National Training Camp from other clinics.

?Jr. NBA wants aspiring basketball players to develop good personality. We want them to become not only a good basketball player but a good person as well,? said Ip Kam Hung, senior manager for international communications of the Hong Kong-based NBA Asia in a recent interview with Cebu Daily News (CDN).

?That's why we choose aspiring players from various places and bring them together so they would learn how to go along with other players,? said Hung.

The Jr. NBA National Camp had its Cebu Regional Camp Sunday at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) Gym in barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.

?Cebuanos got good fundamental skills and we also want to help them develop their personality,? said Hung, who has been with NBA Asia for the past 10 years.

Hung said he was also impressed with the supports shown by the parents of the young basketball hopefuls during the camp.

?They really want their kids to learn how to play,? he said.

Unlike others, Jr. NBA is also not only for students but also for coaches. ?We also conduct seminars for coaches because aside from teaching kids how to play, we also want them to learn how to motivate the kids,? said Hung.

Hung, meanwhile, highlighted the Filipinos? passion for NBA basketball.

?The Philippines is our biggest market for media in the Asia,? said Hung. ?The Filipinos are really passionate about the NBA. They really know who are the greatest NBA players and the history of the league.?
