Marvin Sonsona of the Philippines and Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. of Puerto Rico met face to face once again during a press conference held Wednesday in Puerto Rico to promote their WBO superbantamweight title fight this Feb. 28 (Manila time) billed as ?Making History.?
?I am physically and mentally prepared for this fight. I am in the best condition than is possible to be had,? said Vázquez Jr.
If Vázquez wins, he will make history as the first pair of Puerto Rican father-and-son to crown themselves champion. Wilfredo Sr., his father won three titles in three different weight divisions.
?We are focused towards our rival and when we enter the ring, Sonsona is going to see that it was a mistake wanting to fight me.? Vasquez added.
Sonsona, a former WBO superflyweight champion, countered, ?I feel very well with this weight. I have all the tools to defeat to Vázquez and I have much more experience than him.?
The 19-year-old Sonsona, who is trained by Nonito Donaire Sr., has been in Puerto Rico for more than a week.
If he wins, he will make history by being the youngest Filipino boxer to win two world titles in two different weight divisions.
Sonsona won his first world title last year by beating a Puerto Rican, Jose ?Carita? Lopez by 12-round unanimous decision in Canada but lost it after weighing 2.6 lbs over the limit in his first title defense.
