Early publicity KOs Ahas’ title defense

It?s a rare case of publicity killing the title fight it was promoting.

A source close to the situation has revealed that early publicity caused the demise of what would have been a WBO title fight for reigning champion Donnie Nietes against Jesus Silvestre this Saturday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel, according to the source, who requested not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk about the issue, found it odd that the publicity machine for the Nietes-Silvestre WBO showdown had already started churning out press releases in the media announcing the match-up when in fact it was not yet approved by the boxing body.

?Apparently, the WBO top honcho from Puerto Rico did not find it proper to announce the fight when in fact there was still no approval from the WBO board,? said the source. ?This is the problem when people get too excited for an event to the detriment of the show.?

Solar Sports, which is in charge of the publicity for this Saturday's card, apparently has yet to inform the public regarding the non-title status of the fight despite the fact that the WBO had already disapprove it several days ago.

?Reports have continued to come up with stories of the card being a double world title bout, when in fact, it is not, and organizers know this several days ahead,? said another source.

Nietes, however, will still fight Silvestre in a ten-round showdown underneath the Brian Viloria-Carlos Tamara IBF world title showdown.

The official weigh-in is set to take place this morning.
