Liloan pulls away

The men and women squads of Liloan continued their winning rolls in their respective classes in the provincial cluster as they once again registered lopsided wins in the continuation of the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Governor Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup yesterday at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.

The men and women?s squad now lead their respective brackets with similar 3-0 (win-loss) records. The men?s squad, which boasts of some of the best players from the collegiate and commercial levels, defeated Tuburan in easy fashion, 25-10, 25-12 to lead the men?s bracket A.

On the distaff side, Barili fell by the wayside against the strength of the Liloan belles who won, 25-18, 25-17. They now lead bracket B of the women?s competition.

Other teams which remained undefeated in the men?s division were Moalboal, Minglanilla, Catmon and Compostela, who all have similar 2-0 records. Moalboal beat Dalaguete, 25-21, 25-23 while Catmon embarrassed Carmen in a lopsided game which included a first set sweep, 25-0. They also won the second set, 25-17. Compostela on the other hand, outlasted Barili, 25-22, 25-14.

In the women?s division, Sta. Fe continued to be in second place in bracket B with a 2-1 record after they defeated Tuburan, 25-20, 25-19. Minglanilla also has the same record in bracket A following their 25-5, 25-4 win over Boljoon.

In other games in the men?s class, Dumanjug eked past Tuburan, 14-25, 25-23, 25-18 while Compostela defeated Barili, 25-22, 25-14. Moalboal also came away victorious 25-21, 25-23. In the women?s games, Badian edged Tuburan, 24-26, 25-14, 25-14.

The top two teams in each bracket will get to advance to the semifinal round which commences this Saturday at the same venue. The winners there will get to play for the P100,000 cash prize in the championship games on Sunday.
