AS THE first ever Cebu City Marathon nears, organizers are surely putting the pieces together towards a successful staging of the event.
Safety was the agenda of the press conference yesterday as Cebu City Councilor Sylvan ?Jack? Jakosalem announced that half of the roads that will be used during the marathon will be closed from 4 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
The press conference was held at the City Sports Club and was attended by Jakosalem, race organizers Meyrick Jakosalem, John Pages and Jessie Taborada of the Cebu Executive Runners Club, Asia Brewery?s Jack Jabonero, Globe Telecom?s Jerry Yntig and Ayala Center Cebu?s Joy Polloso.
Jakosalem, a member of the Board of the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) pledged this to ensure that the runners will be able to run safely.
?This is the first time that half the road has been closed to accommodate a marathon. This will really help the race since running alongside cars is really unacceptable,? Pages said.
The cash prizes for the winners were also bared as P50,000 will be going to the winner of the 42K race while P25,000 will be awarded to the runner-up. P10,000 will be going to third place, P5,000 to fourth place and P2,500 to the fifth placer. Sixth to 10th placers will get P1,500 each. The winner in the 21K run will be given P15,000 while the 5K run winner will go home with P5,000.
Aside from the cash prizes, Globe has also pledged to give a different phone to each of the first placers in the three runs. Timex, through top marathon runner Rio dela Cruz, also said that they will give watches to the top three finishers in each race.
Registration is now ongoing at the Active Zone in Ayala and at the Philippine Sports Commission office at the Cebu City Sports Complex.
Registration fee is pegged at P650 for the 42K race, P450 for the 21K and P250 for the 5K race. Registration ends on Dec. 31.
