Scoring another win after a successful outing against a title contender remains elusive for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.
The Burger King Whoppers pulled the Painters back to earth by scoring a thrilling 101-99 come-from-behind win last night in the 35th PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Gary David made two free throws in the final 3.1 seconds to give the Whoppers the two-point victory and overcome the ejection of head coach Yeng Guiao, who was tossed in the 7:44 of the second period to two technical fouls.
Prior to David's game-winning free throws, Ronjay Buenafe came up with a big defensive stop when he stole the ball from Gabe Norwood and raced down the court to complete a layup that tied the contest at 99-all with 35.3 ticks left.
Buenafe made yet another big defensive effort in the closing seconds when he blocked Jeffrie Chan's potential game-winning three-point attempt from the right corner as time ran out.
It was the second time that the Painters lost after winning against a favored squad.
They entered the match fresh from a huge 95-93 win over the Talk N Text Tropang Texters.
Before beating Talk N Text, Rain or Shine tripped the Coca-Cola Tigers, 92-84, to post its first win streak in the tournament.
Rain or Shine's other big win came at the expense of the league-leading Alaska Aces, 86-81. But after that win over the then unbeaten Aces, the Painters stumbled in their next outing against Purefoods, 69-103.
Against Burger King, the Painters had their chances of extending their win streak when they erected a 13-point spread in the final 7:27, 92-79.
But Rain or Shine struggled in the succeeding minutes, allowing the Whoppers to steal the victory.
Mark Yee topped the Whoppers with 21 points and scored seven points in an 11-0 run that sparked Burger King's comeback from a 13-point deficit.
Gary David added 17 points. JR Quiñahan donated 16, Beau Belga had 12, while Carlo Sharma pitched in 10 for the Whoppers, who improved to 4-7 (win-loss).
