Cebu Blue Marlins emerge on top in Aquamundo swimfest

THE CEBU BLUE Marlins blew the competition out of the water as they wrapped up their stint in the 1st Aquamundo Age Group Swim Fest by winning the overall title last Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Complex Aquatic Center.

The Blue Marlins, under the leadership of head coach Rolando Alvarez, collected a whopping 34 gold medals, 26 silvers and 30 bronze medals to total 4,526 points, hands down winning the overall title. Finishing in second was the Silliman University Swim Club which had 2,284 points.

Michael Kong and Lyh Ann Navarro were unstoppable as they ruled their respective divisions in the 9-10 age group. They each captured five gold medals.

After winning the 100-meter freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and the 200m medley relay in the morning session last Saturday, Kong added the gold medals in the 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle events.

Navarro, on the other hand, touched the finish line first in the 50m freestyle and the 50m backstroke events.

The two swimmers walked away with the Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS) awards in their divisions.

Also garnering MOS plums were Beth Arellano in the 11-12 girls division as she grabbed four golds and a silver; Fritz Tamara of the 11-12 boys division as he also had the same haul as the latter; and Paula Vega, who scored three gold medals, a silver and a bronze in the 17-over girls division.

Silliman's charge was paced by Michael Jorolan, who had two golds and three silvers in the 17-over men's diovision; Bon Academia and Kit Cavales, who each had two golds in the 15-16 boys class; Sheen Leduna, who was unmatched in the 15-16 girls division with five golds; James Gravador, who contributed three golds in the 13-14 boys division; and Maikela Solomon, who had three golds in the 13-14 girls division.

Finishing third was the Bohol Dolphins Swim Club with 541 points while the Dipolog Blue Marlins grabbed fourth place with 424 points. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
