Texters fend off skidding Tigers, climb to solo fourth place

The Talk N Text Tropang Texters bounced back from a painful defeat by escaping the cellar-dwelling Coca-Cola Tigers, 107-104, last night in an out-of-town game of the 35th PBA Philippine Cup in General Santos City.

Harvey Carey posted a double-double performance with 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Texters, who moved up to solo fourth place with their seventh win against four losses.

Talk N Text wasted a 20-point third quarter lead in its 93-95 loss against Rain or Shine last Wednesday and flirted with another disaster against Coke when it lost a sizable nine-point lead at the start of the fourth.

Mark Macapagal led the Tigers' comeback by pouring in 11 of his game-high 23 points in the final period.

Dennis Espino put the Tigers on top, 104-103, but the Texters? Ali Peek made two free throws in the final 30.1 seconds, giving Talk N Text the lead for good, 105-104.

Peek completed his heroics by blocking a driving Alex Cabagnot and Jimmy Alapag sealed the Talk N Text's win with two crucial freebies in the dying seconds.

The loss?their seventh straight?further pulled the Tigers down the cellar with a dismal 1-10 (win-loss) slate.

Meanwhile, three teams try to stretch their winning streaks in today's double-header at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Burger King Whoppers play the rejuvenated Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the first game while the over-achieving Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings take on sister-team Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants in the main game.

The Painters recorded their first winning streak in the tournament with
