Blue Marlins tankers make waves in first day of Aquamundo age-group swimfest

The Cebu Blue Marlins (CBM) held court on their own home pool as they dominated the first day of action in the 1st Aquamundo Age Group Swim Fest yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center Aquatic Center .

The Blue Marlins, under the tutelage of multi-awarded Rolando Alvarez, notched a whopping 18 gold medals and added 16 silvers and 17 bronze medals to their impressive haul.

Their efforts allowed them to gain 2,288.67 points, miles ahead of their closest pursuers, the Silliman University Swim Team, which had 1,098 points for their six golds, four silvers and seven bronze catch.

Heading the gold rush were Michael Kong and Lyh Ann Navarro, who garnered four gold medals each. They each had three gold medals in the individual events and added another in the relay.

Kong, the stalwart in the 9-10 boys age group, ruled over the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:14.74. He also finished the 50m butterfly event with a time of 34.35 seconds and added the gold in the 50m breastroke as he touched the finish line with a time of 47.86. He also anchored the 200m medley relay as the Blue Marlins finished first with a time of 2:40.28.

Navarro, on the other hand, dominated the 9-10 girls age group, as she won the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:16.19 while the 50m butterfly was also hers for the taking, winning it in 37.97 seconds. She also won the 50m breastroke with a time of 47.10 seconds. She joined hands with Trina Cañeda and Danielle Ballesteros to win the 200m medley relay in 2:42.14.

Fritz Tamara, in the 11-12 boys contributed three gold medals to CBM?s cause while Ballesteros of the 11-12 girls added two. Beth Arellano of the 11-12 girls age group also had two gold medals to her name.

Winning a gold each were Gian Bagano, Joyce Huguete, Paula Vega and Beverly Vasig.

In third place was the Bohol Dolphins, who had 359 points while the Dipolog Blue Marlins was in fourth with 272 points. Rounding out the top-five was the Negros Oriental Blue Dolphins with 210 points.
