The two top teams of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) were wiped out in contrasting fashion in the Sweet 16 stage of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Nine-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers were upset by the Mapua Cardinals, 73-76, while runners-up University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters were crushed by UAAP finalists University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 85-105.
The disappointing results left Cebu with only one last representative in the face of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, who will have the daunting task of facing the NCAA champions San Sebastian Stags tomorrow at the Superdome in Ormoc City.
For the second year in a row, the Lancers are going home earlier than expected as they fell by the wayside, thanks to the 22-point explosion of former “Rookie of the Year” Allan Mangahas and the 14-point contribution of Andretti Stevens.
Two-time Cesafi MVP Greg Slaughter tried his best to tow his squad to the Elite Eight as he scored 22 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had four blocks. However, aside from rookie guard Eman Calo who had 13 points, nobody else managed to score in twin digits.
The Lancers had every chance to take the game as they led by nine, 19-10, after the first period and held a 52-45 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
However, just like their fourth-period meltdown last year against UE, UV was not able to sustain their energy.
UC, on the other hand, had no chance from the get-go as it trailed from opening tip until the final buzzer.
Explosive guard Paul Lee had a showcase game at the expense of UC as he had a triple-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
UE’s vaunted frontcourt of Elmer Espiritu and Pari Llagas also had a field day with the former notching 14 points, four assists and three rebounds and the latter adding 17 points, five boards and three assists.
Moncrief Rogado led UC with 25 points and 11 rebounds while June Mar Fajardo managed 24 points and 12 boards.
Next up for UE in the next round will be the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws while Mapua tackles San Beda.
