ORGANIZERS of the Cebu City Marathon are setting the bar high for the inaugural staging of the event as they will using the ChampionChip identification device when the race kicks off in January 2010.
The Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC) led by officials Jesse Taboarada, John Pages and Meyrick and Pearl Jacalan, announced the innovation in a press conference yesterday.
The ChampionChip is a high-tech identification device used to time athletes during the full 42K and the 21K half marathons scheduled for January 10, 2010.
The technology consists of a miniature transponder in a specially designed housing marked with a unique identification number. The transponder is a waterproof glass capsule that contains a silicon chip and an energizing coil. The chip inside will digitally house the runner's name along with his time.
Taborada said that using the chip will deter dishonesty amongst other benefits as it provides organizers with fast, accurate, and the highest quality results both electronically and in hard-copy.
?The standards have to be raised and we have to make a good impression since this is our first staging of the race,? said Jacalan during the press conference.
The usage of the ChampionChip came with a hefty price tag as organizers estimate the cost to at more than P500,000.
This development upped the registration fee a bit with the 42K race now pegged at P650; the 21K at P450 and the 5K at P250.
Interested runners may register at the Active Zone at the Ayala Center Cebu and at the Cebu City Sports Center.
