MOVE OVER RJ Jazul, there is a new gunslinger in town for the Letran Knights.
Jaypee Belencion picked up the slack in the absence of three of their senior gunners as he tallied a career-high 36 points highlighted by a record-tying 10 three-pointer shots en route to leading the Knights to an 83-72 win over the defending champions La Salle Green Archers in the Sweet 16 stage of the Philppine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) yesterday at the Ynares Center in Pasig City.
Belencion was red-hot from behind the three-point area as he sank 10 of his 19 attempts including consecutive makes in the game's final four minutes that put away the Green Archers for good. He also added seven rebounds to his stat line as Letran missed the services of Jazul, Rey Guevarra and Kirk del Rosario.
The Knights led 64-52 entering the final period when La Salle went to rookie Arvie Bringas who delivered nine in a sizzling 11-0 run that trimmed the lead down to five, 66-71. But Letran had an answer the next time down the floor as Reymar Gutilban sank a trifecta followed by two more by Belencion that established an 80-66 lead, which held until the end.
Gutilban added 15 points, three rebounds and four assists while Kevin Alas had 12 points, all coming in the first half, as the Knights marched on to the Elite Eight joining early qualifiers Far Eastern University and San Beda.
Letran's next assignment will be the winner of this weekend's match-up between the NCAA champions San Sebastian and Cesafi third-placer University of San Carlos.
