Dethroned Mexican light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa is planning to file a formal protest with the World Boxing Council over the manner by which he was dealt his defeat by Filipino Rodel Mayol over the weekend in Chiapas, Mexico.

Mayol, making his fifth try at a world title, finally nailed one after stopping Sosa in the second round of their title duel. The highly-regarded Sosa was making the eleventh defense of the title he won over Fil-Am Brian Viloria.

According to reports, Sosa's protest will center on the accidental clash of heads in the second round which he claims made things difficult for him. Mayol, who was deducted a point following the head clash, went on to demolish Sosa who was at the receiving end of the Filipino's power punches.

“I did not recover from the headbutt. It was hard to fight because I was very hurt and could not focus. What happened was intentional,” Sosa told the media. “There should have been a disqualification but they let it continue.”

The WBC, so far, has been reportedly quoted as saying that it plans to grant an immediate rematch for Sosa, although his cut will most likely sideline him for several months.

“The result has to be changed to a non-contest because the intentional head-butt clearly provoked the final outcome. We are calling for a rematch once Edgar recuperates and, I assure you, Sosa will demonstrate who is the real champion. We have in our hands the videos and photos to show the un-sportsmanlike actions of the challenger,” said Sosa's manager Jacques Deschamps.

A review of the fight tape, however, seems to indicate that the clash of heads was unintentional, with both fighters visibly hurt although it was Sosa who bled profusely. The Mexican fighter was clearly not in Mayol's league, and had no answer to all the power punches unleashed by the Filipino fighter especially following the first-round knockdown.

“Even at the weigh-in, we noticed that Sosa looked drained and a few hours later we saw him again. He appeared bloated, possibly from too much liquid in so short a time,” said Dr. Ed De la Vega, who served as Mayol's cutman. “Clearly Sosa had some weight issues he and his team failed to solve correctly,” he added.
