7 STRAIGHT FOR SMB

Beermen rack up seventh consecutive win

Local hero Hontiveros joins 5,000-point club First Posted 08:16:00 11/22/2009

Games Sunday:

Araneta Coliseum

4:00 p.m.- Sta. Lucia vs. Barako Bull

6:30 p.m.- Alaska vs. Purefoods

Cebuano hotshot Dondon Hontiveros had yet to break a sweat when he scored a historic basket.

The San Miguel Beermen also barely broke a sweat in dismantling the Coca-Cola Tigers, 107-84, in a yawner of a game of the 35th PBA Philippine Cup at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

After nine years in the league, Hontiveros, playing out of the University of Cebu (UC), finally joined the 5,000-point club when he scored 18 points, making him the 60th member of the elite group.

Hontiveros completed the feat right from the very first possession of the game. After the Beermen won the opening tip, Hotiveros drove to the baseline, eluded three Coca-Cola defenders to complete a nifty reverse layup.

Hontiveros could not find a perfect venue to achieve the feat. The Cebu Coliseum is where Hontiveros polished his skills as one of the vital cogs of the UC Aguilas (now Webmasters) during the Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA) days.

Hontiveros also keyed the Beermen's hot start, never looking back after posting a 29-17 lead after the first period.

San Miguel held on to double digit leads after that, including an insurmountable 82-61 lead after three quarters of play.

San Miguel's biggest lead stood at 90-65 on Lordy Tugade's basket at the 8:18 mark of the third.

Thus, the Beermen tallied their seventh straight win against two losses to move closer to the league-leaders Alaska Aces, who are 7-1 (win-loss).

Aside from Hontiveros, the Beermen also got solid performance from Arwind Santos, Dorian Peña and Jonas Villanueva, who finished with 16, 14 and 12 markers, respectively.

Mark Macapagal scored 18 points, Dale Singson and Chris Ross tallied 11 each for the reeling Tigers, who stumbled to their sixth loss with in seven games.

Meanwhile, the Aces try to build enough cushion with the Beermen when they clash with the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants (4-3) in today's main game at the Araneta Coliseum. Facing off in the first game are the Sta. Lucia Realtors (4-3) and the struggling Barako Bull Energy Boosters (2-6).
