Hontiveros eyes PBA milestone in game vs Coke at homecourt

First Posted 07:56:00 11/21/2009

CEBUANO HOTSHOT Dondon Hontiveros looks to hit two birds with one stone when his San Miguel Beermen take on the struggling Coca-Cola Tigers in the 2009 KFC PBA Philippine Cup today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Hontiveros, who honed his skills while playing for the University of Cebu (UC) and the defunct Cebu Gems here, is hoping to clinch a crucial milestone in his decorated career at the place where it all began.

He is just a point shy of joining the 5,000-point club and is looking forward to paying back all his supporters by celebrating the milestone here in Cebu.

Hontiveros scored 20 points in San Miguel's 92-76 rout of the Purefoods TJ Giants, the Beermen's sixth win in eight games.

San Miguel is currently just a half-a-game behind the league-leading Alaska Aces, who are toting a 6-1 (win-loss) card.

?Actually, the idea was Olsen's. Before the Purefoods game, I knew I needed to score 21 in order to reach 5,000. But Olsen said that it would be much better if I reached the milestone here in Cebu. I've been playing in the PBA for nine years already and it would be a nice moment to reach that in front of my fellow Cebuanos,? said Hontiveros in an interview with Cebu Daily News after their practice yesterday afternoon.

Hontiveros and the rest of the Beermen are not taking the Tigers lightly, especially with their veteran frontcourt of Dennis Espino and ?The Rock? Asi Taulava.

Meanwhile, the Burger King Whoppers registered their first winning streak of the tournament when they routed the skidding Barako Bull Energy Boosters, 102-86.

Leading from start to finish, the Whoppers, who came from a 106-97 win over the Tigers, leaned on the 17-point performance of Ronjay Buenafe to bag their third win in eight games.

The Energy Boosters absorbed their fourth straight defeat to drop to 2-6. Correspondent Jonas Panerio with a report from Editorial Assistant Calvin D. Cordova
