THE San Beda Red Lions closed out their run of tune-up games here in Cebu with a bang as they dealt the nine-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers a 77-65 defeat yesterday at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.
The former three-time NCAA champions took advantage of the absence of two-time Cesafi MVP, the 7-foot Greg Slaughter as they pounded the ball inside with the 6-foot-8 Sudan Daniel and the pair of 6-foot-7 pivots Jake and Kyle Pascual taking turns with the scoring chores.
The Green Lancers hung tough in the first half as they led 21-20 after the first period and trailed by just two, 38-40, at the halftime break.
San Beda started to impose their will at the onset of the third period as the Green Lancers fell into a maze of errors resulting in just seven points for them in that stretch while the Red Lions frolicked for 17.
A 13-5 run that was capped off by a three-pointer from the corner by David Samerad erected a 10-point bulge at 53-43 and ballooned into 12, 57-45, heading into the final period.
From thereonend, the Red Lions never looked back as they pushed the lead to a high of 17, 77-60, after shots from Garvo Lanete, Daniel and former University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) star Jessmar Villahermosa.
Lanete topped San Beda with 16 points while Villahermosa finished with 12.
Ritchum Dennison paced UV with 14 markers while Edrian Lao added 10 points.
The match-up was a preview of what could be an encounter between the two teams in the round-of-eight stage of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL). Should the Lancers beat Mapua and the Red Lions hurdle the San Sebastian College-Cavite Baycats.
