THE FORMER three-time NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions kicked off their intense preparations for the Philippine Collegiate Champions League on a high note as they defeated the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 76-71, in their exhibition match yesterday at the USC gym.

With the all-important round-of-16 looming on the horizon for both squads, the Warriors and the Red Lions engaged in a testy battle that saw neither team give an inch to the other for most of the game.

In the end, the size the Red Lions proved to be the big difference with 6-foot-8 American center Sudan Daniel electrifying the crowd with a pair of slam dunks including one in the dying seconds that secured the win.

With the Warriors threatening at 71-74 after a three-pointer by Mike Cantonao, Daniel came off the baseline and jammed home a two-handed flush that got the crowd on its feet and more importantly, put the Red Lions on top, 76-71, with just 8.6 seconds remaining in the game. He also had a thunderous alley-oop slam over USC's Eddie Bakker in the third period that drew raucous applause from the crowd.

Daniel's basket was the saving grace for San Beda, which nearly squandered a nine-point lead in the fourth period.

Garvo Lanete had 18 points to lead San Beda, which continues its series of tune-up games today against former Liga national champions M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños.

They will wrap up their stint here in Cebu with a match against the nine-time Cesafi champions UV Green Lancers.
