COSTLY LOSS

Falcons’ setback to SSC-R denies them of PCCL round-of-16 seat

The Adamson University Falcons saw their bid for a slot in the Sweet 16 stage of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) go up in smoke after they were denied entry by the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Cavite Baycats, which beat them, 88-78, in the final day of the Cebu interzonal qualifying games late Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win by the two-time NAASCU champions pegged a three-way logjam in the standings as the Falcons, the Baycats and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters were all tied with similar 2-1 (win-loss) records. The development forced organizers to use the quotient system which meant that the points scored by the three teams would be divided by their points against.

When the dust cleared, it was San Sebastian that came out with the highest quotient with a 1.06. UC came in second with a 1.013 while Adamson, which came into Sunday's game with a clean 2-0 record, finished third with a 0.956.

The Baycats and the Webmasters thus formally booked their slots in the round-of-16 with UC joining Cesafi squads University of the Visayas (UV) and the University of San Carlos (USC). The other early qualifiers are the Ateneo Blue Eagles (UAAP champion), San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags (NCAA champion), UE Red Warriors, FEU Tamaraws, UST Growling Tigers, San Beda Red Lions, JRU Heavy Bombers and Letran Knights.

Arellano University are also in the national finals after their dominant showing in the Bacolod zonal games.

The Sweet 16 starts off in Nov. 23 at the Ynares Center in Pasig City.
