THE UNIVERSITY of Cebu (UC) Webmasters made their way to the Sweet 16 of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) after they bested the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 103-86, in the Cebu interzonal qualifying competition yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Webmasters finished the tournament with a 2-1 (win-loss) record and all but insured their slot in the round-of-16, pending a miracle win by the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Baycats over the undefeated Adamson Falcons in the second game yesterday. That match was still being played as of press time.
UC led all the way and was paced by 6-foot-10 June Mar Fajardo's 26 points. Speedy pont guard Kelvin Juliane also had 26 points built on four three-point shots. Robinson Mohamad tallied 16 markers.
The win was a fitting follow-up to their masterful 74-66 win over the two-time NAASCU champions Baycats late Saturday night.
While Fajardo was his usual dominant self, reserve guard Mohamad provided the necessary firepower to tow the Webmasters to the victory as he made up for the absence of star wingman Moncrief Rogado.
Rogado was sidelined after injuring his ankle in their game against Adamson last Friday.
Mohamad exploded for 19 points built on six three-point shots, four of which coming in the second canto, where the Webmasters built a 10-point lead, 37-27, heading into the halftime break. Fajardo scored 23 points to lead UC in that match./Correspondent Jonas Panerio
