UV IN CLOUD NINE

Green Lancers win ninth straight Cesafi seniors crown

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers landed in cloud nine after capturing their ninth straight Cesafi seniors division title following their 75-62 victory over the upstart University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in Game 4 of the best-of-five Finals series yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

While the hyped clash of the titans between UV's 7-foot-center Greg Slaughter and UC's 6-foot-10 giant June Mar Fajardo proved to be a dud last night, another hero emerged to etch his name in Lancer lore.

Eman Calo, the unheralded rookie guard, picked the perfect time to have his breakout game as he tallied a game-high 21 points.

A mere day after scoring 15 in Game 3 that proved to be key to their victory, Calo once again displayed his fearlessness as he scored 11 in the final period to help the Lancers close out the series, 3-1, and end UC's dream season.

Slaughter was held down to just six points while Fajardo faltered when it mattered the most, managing just seven points. Both, however, were named co-MVPs for the tournament.

UV took control of the game early as they reigned from behind the three-point arc, sinking five three-point shots for a 15-12 lead.

Calo spearheaded a blistering 11-0 run that was capped off by consecutive trifectas by Macmac Manigque and Calo for a 32-20 lead. UV eventually held on for a 34-27 lead at halftime.

The Lancers kept a 50-40 lead going into the final period and broke the game wide open with easy fastbreak baskets that erected an insurmountable 66-46 lead.

Ralf Olivares, Harold Cincoflores and Calo proved to be too quick to handle as they oversaw a 16-6 rally that forced UC to sit down Fajardo for good with 4:04 left in the game.

UC came close to 10, 61-71, but Calo ended that comeback attempt with an acrobatic alley-oop lay-up that brought their rabid fans led by UV president and Congressman Eddie Gullas, off their feet.

Cincoflores had 15 points for UV while Ritchum Dennison added 10 markers.

Moncrief Rogado had 13 for UC while Mark Tano contributed 12 points

The Mythical Five was bannered by Slaughter, Fajardo, Rogado, Chris Diputado and the University of San Carlos' (USC) Giovanni Padillo.

UV will now set their sights on the title in the upcoming Philippine Collegiate Champions League late in November.

UC, on the other hand, will have to compete against Adamson University, San Sebastian Cavite and the University of San Jose-Recoletos for a wildcard slot in the pocket tournament starting on Nov. 5.
