The Alaska Aces survived a furious second half rally by the Barangay Ginebra Kings to carve out a, 105-96 victory and stay unbeaten in the 35th PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum, last night.
The win stretched Alaska's unbeaten run to four for the solo lead in the team standings while dealing Ginebra its first defeat in three games.
Alaska led by as many as 20 points in the second period and was comfortably ahead at the bend, 60-42.
The Kings' never-say-die attitude however, came into play in the third where Ronald Tubid and Jay-Jay Helterbrand combined in a searing attack that enabled Ginebra to trim its deficit to just two, 80-82, heading into the final period.
The Aces opened the fourth with a 9-0 blitz to restore an, 89-80 lead but the pesky Kings came back again and threatened at 90-92 in the final 7:22.
After watching his teammates do the early damage, Willie Miller took charge in the crucial stretch, scoring all of Alaska's points in a critical 6-1 run, pushing the Aces to a, 97-91 spread with time down to four minutes.
The long chase took its toll on the Kings as they ran out of gas in the closing minutes, allowing the Aces to escape with the big victory.
Alaska's agile forward Reynel Hugnatan dominated Ginebra's big men by finishing with 20 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
Tony Dela Cruz scored 18 markers, LA Tenorio had 15, while Miller piled up 11 points for the Aces.
Helterbrand unloaded 23, Tubid contributed 22 for the Kings, who once again played without the injured Eric Menk and Mark Caguioa.
