They started the season with a bang. So it is only fitting that they end it with one.

The eight-time champions University of the Visayas Green Lancers will face the latest and probably the most dangerous challengers to their Cebu collegiate basketball domination when they battle the University of Cebu Webmasters in Game 1 of their best-of-five Finals series in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament.

The Webmasters dealt the Green Lancers their only loss of this season, a 75-73 squeaker in the tournament?s opening game way back in June and fans expect no less than a battle royale in today?s game at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Expected to highlight the slam-bang match-up is the battle in the shaded lane between two of the country?s most talented and tallest men in UV?s 7-foot center Greg Slaughter and UC?s prized 6-foot-10 slotman, June Mar Fajardo. Slaughter especially has an axe to grind against Fajardo this season as he has yet to win a game against the latter in this tournament.

The rest of the Lancers must do their share in the wake of the five-game suspension slapped on their high-flying forward Junjun Lasala. Talented guards Harold Cincoflores, Ritchum Dennison and Chris Diputado will be bringing up the fight against UC?s vaunted trio of Jansen Abella, Moncrief Rogado and Kelvin Juliane.

CIT, USJ-R start jrs title series

The juniors division on the other hand, will have first time finalists Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens and the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars tangle for the crown in a beat-of-five titular series. CIT ousted six-time juniors champions UV in a thrilling best-of-three semis match while USJ-R swept title-favorites UC in the other pairing.

The Wildkittens will be leaning on Jr. NBA MVP Mark Jayven Tallo along with the sweet shooting Franklin Batiquin and Joseph Nalos. USJ-R will counter with star forward Clint Munez and rock-solid forward Edu Autentico.

Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos Warriors won Game 1 in the best-of-three series for third place, after beating the USJ-R Jaguars, 79-72, in overtime, late Tuesday night. Joven Cortes scored 27 while Giovanni Padillo added 21 for the Warriors.
