The addition of Moncrief Rogado has paid dividends for the University of Cebu (UC) as the latter led the Webmasters to just their second appearance in the Finals of the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) with an 87-78 win over the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in Game 2 of the best-of-three semifinal series Sunday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.
The victory swept the series, 2-0, in the Webmasters' favor and set up an explosive Finals showdown with the eight-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers. UV also swept its own semifinal series with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 2-0, Saturday.
Rogado, a former star of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), pumped in 18 points but none more important than the five-point cluster he dropped in the game's final two minutes that put an end to the Warriors' frantic charge from a 15-point fourth period deficit.
UC was ahead, 81-66, when the Warriors came alive and unleashed a 12-0 run behind the hot-shooting og wingman Giovanni Padillo.
Rogado quickly extinguished the blaze with a tough jumpshot that pushed the lead back up to five, 83-78. He made an identical move on UC's next possession that hit nothing but the bottom of the net with 55 seconds left. He added a free-throw for an 86-78 lead to seal the win for the Webmasters.
USC appeared to have the inside track on forcing a do-or-die Game 3 as they led at the turn, 40-37. A 19-2 bomb bridging the end of the third period and the start of the final stanza changed the complexion of the game as UC surged ahead, 79-64.
6-foot-10 center June Mar Fajardo and Rogado were at the helm of the uprising as they combined to score 10 points in that hot stretch.
Power forward Rommel Luceno also had 18 points for UC while Fajardo just had 16 markers. Starting point guard Kelvin Juliane missed the entire second half after injuring his ankle in the second canto.
