There will be a new champion to be crowned this year in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament.

That much is guaranteed after the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars ousted defending champions University of Cebu Baby Webmasters by sweeping their best-of-three semifinal series with an 80-74 win in yesterday?s Game 2 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Proving that their Game 1 victory was no fluke, the Baby Jaguars rallied in the second half and erased an 11-point halftime deficit behind the stellar play of star forward Clint Munez and unheralded guard Alister Escatron, who drained seven three-pointers in the match on his way to establishing a career-high 26 points.

For a while, it looked as if a Game 3 is in the offing after UC raced to a, 45-34 lead at the turn behind the 14-point explosion of Jerei Pingoy. However, the tide suddenly turned USJ-R?s way in the third period, as the Baby Jaguars found their mark from behind the arc, none more so than Escatron, who made three in that stretch.

Munez was also in his element in the third where he scored 10 of his 23 points in that stretch as USJ-R found themselves on top, 62-58, entering the final period.

UC tried to mount a comeback in the final stretch but came up short as Pingoy scored just two points there, while fellow star forwards Alfred Codilla and Alvin Labo-Labo combined for just 11 points all game long. The lone bright spot for UC was Gerald Ampoon, who ended his season by scoring 21 markers.

Tallo scores 32 points as Wildkittens tie Baby Lancers

USJ-R will now wait for the winner of the semis series between the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens and the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, after the former tied their series following their, 73-65 victory in Game 2.

Still seething from their narrow, 74-75, Game 1 loss on a last-second three-pointer by Mark Linao, the Wildkittens roared their loudest behind the game-long brilliance of prodigious guard Mark Jayven Tallo, who torched UV with 32 points.

The deciding Game 3 is scheduled today at the same venue.

Meanwhile, in the seniors division, the top-seeded UC Webmasters showed nerves of steel by coming back from an 18-point deficit in defeating the University of San Carlos Warriors, 97-91, in Game 1 of their best-of-three semis series.

USC led from the opening tip until midway through the final period, where UC erased the double-digit deficit with a hale of three-pointers from cat-quick guard Kelvin Juliane. UC was staring at a 61-72 deficit heading into the final period when it dropped a whopping 26-3 run that put them on top, 84-75.

At the helm of the surge was Juliane, who came to life by making five consecutive three-pointers in that stretch.

USC battled back to within two, 88-90, but Moncrief Rogado hit a tough leaner that gave them a four-point cushion, 92-88 with 24 seconds left. Jansen Abella then sealed the win with four straight free-throws.

6-foot-10 behemoth June Mar Fajardo scored 27 points, Rogado added 20 while Juliane wound up with 18 markers.
