TWO straight losses to start the tournament is so uncharacteristic for a star-studded team like San Miguel.
Willie Miller and LA Tenorio starred at endgame as the Alaska Aces dealt the Beermen their second straight loss, 85-74 in the first out-of-town game of the 35th PBA Philippine Cup yesterday in Panabo, Davao del Norte.
Miller and Tenorio combined for 41 points to propel the Aces to the top of the standings with a, 2-0 win-loss card in the newly opened conference.
A team loaded with talent whose second stringers could start in the other squads, San Miguel again struggled with its scoring similar to its 86-93 loss to the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings last Wednesday.
Pounding on the Beermen's lackadaisical offense, the Aces dominated the contest right from the opening buzzer and built leads of as many as 15 points.
But San Miguel caught fire in the fourth and down by 11 points at the start of the final canto 53-64, the Beermen, behind Arwind Santos and Dorian Peña, moved to within a point, 68-69, in the final 5:14.
San Miguel had at least three opportunities to surge ahead but blew its chances as Miller and Tenorio took over.
Miller and Tenorio took turns in canning booming trifectas that gave Alaska some breathing space, 75-68 and after a turnover by San Miguel, Miller assisted Tenorio, who canned another triple from the left elbow, allowing the Aces to erect an insurmountable 78-68 lead going into the final three minutes of the contest. /EDITORIAL ASSISTANT CALVIN D.
