Whoppers down Smart Gilas

First Posted 07:30:00 10/17/2009

Unheralded big man Beau Belga gave the Burger King Whoppers some reasons why there is really no need to fret about the loss of Japeth Aguilar.

Belga, the seventh pick in the 2008 Rookie Draft, outplayed Aguilar, this year's number one overall pick, and led the Whoppers to a fight-marred 115-105 win over the Smart Gilas yesterday in the 35th PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-foot-6 Belga coughed up 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to complement the equally impressive games of Ronjay Buenafe and Gary David.

Buenafe scored 25 points, while David finished with 24 markers as Burger King bounced back from its 80-93 loss to the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants last Sunday.

The 6-ffot-10 Aguilar tallied 18 points and six rebounds in his first game with Gilas after a one-game stint with the Whoppers.

The game was marred by an ugly incident involving a fight between Burger King's stocky point guard Wynnie Arboleda and a fan identified as a certain Alain Katigbak.

The incident occurred in the second quarter when the fan allegedly cursed Arboleda after the latter committed a flagrant foul on Macmac Baracael.

"I'm very sorry with what happened. Pero nagdilim ang paningin ko dahil sobra-sobra ang pagmumura nya sa amin, lalo na sa akin," Arboleda told pba.ph.

Arboleda attacked the Gilas fan on his seat along the first row at the special courtside seats. Katigbak sustained bruises in his face during the incident.

Arboleda is likely to draw stiff sanction because of the incident. He is set to appear before the Commissioner's office on Monday.

CJ Giles, a former Los Anges Laker groomed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas for naturalization, settled for 12 points and seven rebounds. He was held down due to foul trouble and eventually fouled out with six minutes left in the game.

In the second game, Ryan Reyes fired 21 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the three-point field to lead the Sta. Lucia Realtors to a 95-76 dumping of the Coca-Cola Tigers.
