What was widely considered to be highly improbable turned into reality last Tuesday evening as the eighth-seeded Don Bosco College (DBC) Greywolves stunned the top-seeded University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 77-74, in the quarterfinals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) seniors division basketball tournament at the University of San Carlos(USC) gymnasium.
Even with the obvious height and heft disadvantage, the Greywolves played with skill and a hunger that was not seen in the first round, as they led by as many as 18 in the first half, got ambushed in the fourth period and recovered in the endgame to extend their season and send the quarterfinal matchup into a winner-take-all game next week.
Don Bosco also made history as they became the first team in the league to defeat a top seed in the quarterfinals.
Ironically, the win was their first this season after going 0-7 (win-loss) in the elimination round.
Allain Delos Santos led Don Bosco with 19 points while Celso Colegado scored 16 markers.
Star wingman Moncrief Rogado did not suit up for UC because of a fever.
The quarterfinal stage of the tournament continues today when the eight-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers tackle the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers at 6 pm.
