The junior and senior squads of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) shone brightly on the volleyball courts as they came up with huge wins in the Cebu School Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball tournament at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) gym along Salinas Drive in Lahug.
The men?s squad kept their undefeated record intact after they survived a gritty USPF squad and emerged victorious in a three-set battle. The Spiking Jaguars are now at 5-0 (win-loss) after winning 25-23, 25-19, 25-22.
Their junior counterparts, on the other hand, exacted revenge on USPF in the boys? class as they came away with the title with a 25-21, 25-17 victory. The title was the Baby Jaguars? second and it could not have come at a better time after USJ-R was beaten by USPF in the championship game in the girls? category.
USJ-R relived its rivalry with USPF, which it battled and lost to in the title game two years ago.
The first set appeared to be in the bag for USJ-R as it led by five points late in the canto. But USPF came roaring back to come to within one, 22-23. However, Louijie Tipgos stopped the rally by scoring the last two points.
The second set saw USJ-R rattle off eight straight points and blow the game wide open, 23-14 en route to the set win. It was an all-Ariel Carumba show as the USJ-R skipper proved to be unstoppable with his thunderous spikes. USJ-R ended the match in the third set as the combination of errors by USPF and the former?s relentless defense was too much to handle for the Panthers.
In the women?s division, the defending champions USPF zoomed to 5-0 after beating the University of San Carlos (USC), 26-24, 25-22, 25-18 in a battle of undefeated squads. USC fell to 4-1 and into a tie with Southwestern University (SWU), which won over the University of Cebu (UC) in convincing fashion, 25-12, 25-1, 25-17.
USJ-R improved to 3-2 after beating the University of Visayas , 25-20, 25-22, 25-18.
