9 STRAIGHT TITLES

USPF junior volleybelles continue domination of Cesafi juniors volleyball

There is only one team that rivals the overwhelming dominance of the eight-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament and that is the sheer success of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in juniors volleyball action.

This after their junior volleybelles of USPF captured an unprecedented ninth straight title in the CESAFI volleyball tournament following their straight sets victory over rivals University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in the title game yesterday at the USPF gym in Lahug.

The wards of head coach Jordan Paca were simply in dishing out vengeance against USJ-R, which dealt them their only loss of the tournament earlier in the elimination round.

The finals was a whole new ball game for USPF as they overpowered USJ-R, 25-13, in the first set before turning to skipper Jinky Garidos, Kaise delos Santos and Cyd Demecillo in the ensuing canto to hack out a 25-15 win and complete the championship win.

?Nindot kaayo na na-straight namo ni ug daug for nine years. We?ll give it our best to make it an even 10 next year,? said a jubilant Paca after the match.

That particular feat will be daunting as the rest of his squad will be graduating except for setter Shyrra Cabriana.

Meanwhile, USPF?s seniors? men and women counterparts were also victorious.

The Lady Spiking Panthers, defending champions in the competition, wasted little time in disposing of the University of Cebu (UC), 25-13, 25-12, 25-20.

The Spiking Panthers also swept the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT), 25-17, 25-10, 25-22.

Defending men?s titlists USJ-R pummeled the Cebu Doctors? University (CDU), 25-8, 25-10, 25-13, to up their record to a clean 4-0 (win-loss).

The University of San Carlos (USC) of coach Roderick Arenasa improved its standing to 3-1 at the expense of the UC as they won in four sets 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14.

The elimination round continues today with an explosive match-up between undefeated squads USPF and USC in the women?s class and a featured clash between USJ-R and USPF in the men?s division.
