Life for the neophyte Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) Eagles is proving to be more difficult than expected as they suffered their second straight loss after being routed by the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 82-94, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
After getting off their maiden campaign to a incredible start with four straight wins, the Eagles are now encountering rough waters as they lost for the second time in barely a week. And there will be no rest afforded to the weary as today, they will be facing the prodigious Mark Jayven Tallo and the rest of the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens in a crucial match that has profound effects in the seedings heading into the quarterfinal stage next week.
The wards of head coach Marlon Piodo ambushed their opponents with a sizzling performance in the first period as they led, 28-15. Not long after, they erected a 20-point lead 44-24 behind the shotmaking of Clint Munez, Edu Autentico and Venj Trozo which eventually held, 51-32, at the turn.
SHS-J's predicament worsened in the ensuing canto as USJ-R turned on its jets and unleashed a 13-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer by Renzo Senining which gave the Baby Jaguars their biggest lead of the game, 70-38.
Amazingly, the Eagles did not hang their heads as they trimmed the lead down to just 12, 70-82, after a huge rally spearheaded by Chris Porter and Bradley Bacaltos.
The Baby Jaguars remained unfazed and turned to Munez to deliver the finishing kick as the latter scored eight of their last 12 points to secure the victory.
Munez had 21 points to lead USJ-R while Senining added 18 markers. Autentico supplemented those by adding 17 points. Adrian Muller paced SHS-J with 21 points.
USJ-R improved their record to 4-3 (win-loss) while the Eagles dropped to 4-2, the same record with the Wildkittens.
