The neophyte Sacred Heart School-Jesuits (SHS-J) Eagles got a rude awakening in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (CESAFI) basketball tournament after they suffered their first loss at the hands of defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 66-92, yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
After flying high by winning their first four games, the Eagles were brought down to earth by an onslaught of points from UC's potent backcourt of Marlon Pingoy and Gerald Ampoon.
The Baby Webmasters improved their record to a league-best 6-0 (win-loss) and remain as the only undefeated squad. SHS-J dropped to 4-1.
UC got the scoring parade off to a rousing start as they zoomed off to a 30-17 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
The Eagles tried to make a game out of it but were repulsed by an 8-0 blast that gave the Baby Webmasters a 68-49 lead that settled at 70-52, heading into the final period. Ampoon wound up with 19 points.
The other juniors game saw the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens overwhelm the helpless Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 126-44.
In the seniors division, the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors successfully claimed the fourth seed in the quarterfinals after defeating the CIT Wildcats, 74-68.
