The University of the East Red Warriors got back on the winning track as they escaped the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 95-91, in double-overtime in the 72nd UAAP basketball tournament yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.
High-scoring guard Paul Lee showed another facet of his game as he gave a wonderful assist to Pari Llagas, for the go-ahead basket that shattered a 89-all deadlock with 10 seconds remaining in the intense game. Llagas then pegged the final count with several free-throws down the stretch.
Lee's assist was redemption for his inconsistent play in the late stages of regulation and missed free-throws in the first overtime that could have given his team the win. Still, he almost ended up with a triple double as he scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds and eight assists.
Lee was not the only hero on the Red Warriors squad as Elmer Espiritu also had a career game for them with 20 points while Llagas collected 19 markers, 11 boards and four blocks.
The win improved UE?s record to 3-2 (win-loss) while Adamson tumbled to 1-5. It was the Falcons? fourth setback with a margin of less than five points.
